Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by her mother, her grandmother, and her godparents. Her father left her family. While a small girl, Ford was battling anxious disorders, obsessive/compulsive and was afflicted through word-related associations. Ford began to become fascinated by acting during her teenaged years, and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. She gained admission to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but decided after a week that she would not be a good fit there. Ford then applied for a spot at the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. He would go on to have regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford was able to graduate in 1993. She made her television debut in the 1992 episode Surgical Spirit. She adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Through the Nineties, Tate could be found on TV in shows including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Apart from her regular theatre work, Tate joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate received recognition for her stand-up comedy and became part of her resume in 1996.
