Gabriel

Gabriel Salazar Vergara was born on January 31, 1936. Vergara is Chilean historiography. His country is well-known for his research in sociology as well as his theories of movement. His work was especially prominent during the protests by students of between 2011-12 and the year in the protests of 2006. Salazar was born to an impoverished family. He went to Universidad de Chile and studied the fields of sociology, philosophy and historical studies. Salazar also served as an assistant to Mario Gongora and Hector Herrera Cajas the classic historian. Salazar was a Revolutionary Left Movement member from 1973 until 1973. He was also tortured by the army in Villa Grimaldi that same year. After being released from the military prison in the year 1976, he was sent into exile to The United Kingdom. In the United Kingdom, he was granted a scholarship for further studies at University of Hull. He obtained a PhD in Economic and Social History from the university in the year 1984. The following year, he returned to Chile. Salazar was not well-known until the year 1985, when he achieved his breakthrough. The subjects he studied included peons, labourers, proletarians, children's Huachos, women and children. Salazar was one of the founders of Nueva Historia Social, a historical movement. Salazar considers history to be an instrument to encourage actions of society. Interview: Salazar declared that he is a "leftist social historian, critical" and he did not accept the label "Marxist".
